You’ve maybe heard that making a living as an artist is difficult. That is putting it mildly. But the living I am making is way more than the income my work generates. It is about the people I have met, stories I’ve heard, curious folks who drop by when they see my studio door open, pictures from strangers showing how they are incorporating my pieces into their lives. I am fulfilled.
Each day, as I step into my studio and feel the cool clay beneath my fingertips, a sense of reverence washes over me. It is a love affair that continues to flourish, year after year. It is a partnership built on patience, skill, and dedication. As I mold and shape the clay, I marvel at its malleability, knowing that it holds endless possibilities within its smooth surface. With each turn of the potter's wheel, I embark on a creative journey that intertwines artistry with functionality.
I have come to understand that the beauty of pottery lies in its imperfections. The subtle variations and ridges in the glaze, the unique shapes born from a spontaneous touch of the hand – these are the elements that give my work character and authenticity. I cherish the idiosyncrasies that emerge during the firing process, as nature leaves its indelible mark on each piece. It is through imperfection that true beauty shines.
Pottery is more than just a means of artistic expression; it is a tactile experience. As we run our fingers along the smooth curves of a mug or the textured surface of a vase, we feel a connection to the process and the potter's intention. I seek to create pieces that evoke such emotion and elevate everyday moments. There is joy in savoring a warm cup of tea from a handcrafted mug, or displaying a bouquet of flowers in a carefully crafted vase.
It is an honor and privilege to do the work I do. It soothes my soul, allows what lies within me to be manifest, and adds a touch of beauty, connection and soothing to another human beings experience.
